I’m probably the only Holistic Health Coach with a degree in Art History!
Growing up, I was always surrounded by art & beautiful things. (My father was a museum curator). So, from a very young age I’ve had an innate awareness of beauty & how it impacts our everyday lives.
It’s why I studied Art History in college. And it’s also what led – in a roundabout way – to my former career as an interior designer, my passion for Green living & my current focus on creating a safe & uplifting environment in your home, while doing what you can to reduce your exposure to things that cause you harm.
Along with the flip side - increasing your exposure to food & behaviors that are protective.
The thing about Beauty
Back in the day, I was designing peoples' homes & living spaces to be beautiful & functional, & make them feel a certain way.
However, I soon realized it went way further than this (probably around the time I learned I had Celiac Disease), & that the quality of your diet & your physical health is just as important, as the quality & beauty of your surroundings.
It wasn’t always this way
Like you, I’ve had my share of ups & downs. There was certainly a time in my life when art, beauty & creativity were relegated more to the back burner, rather than front & center.
This included some very stressful years full of emotional upheaval, a toxic relationship, & life as a single parent. At my lowest point, I felt quite powerless & alone.
The past caught up with me
It was only years later that I realized the toll this very stressful period had wrought on my health.
In the midst of my design career, I experienced a slew of digestive complaints that soon took over my life. I was also diagnosed with osteoporosis, & that really floored me, since I’d been diligent about eating right & getting plenty of exercise - & had been for years.
Long story short - stress can do that to you.
I didn’t know how to listen to my body.
What happens for many of us is that we’re really NOT in tune with our bodies. And the reason why is because we aren’t taught HOW!
There’s a tendency to disregard those initial aches & pains, or the painful tummy ache right after you’ve eaten, & tell yourself it’s normal – even though it’s not!
Learning to trust your inner voice & pay attention to your body is really key. That, & the wisdom of knowing there’s SO MUCH you can be doing to improve your life & your health - through simple changes to your diet & how you choose to live.
Here’s what else I’ve noticed
As a society, we’ve reached a point where we really need to pay more attention to our food.
What I started to notice, is that beautiful food on your plate can make you feel a certain way & the overly processed, convenient or fast foods that so many of us rely on can make you feel another way entirely (nine times out of ten, it isn’t good).
So now I’m committed to a combination of beautiful, healthy food, & beautiful living. The thing is, if you don’t have your health, it can be really hard to appreciate any of this - or be grateful for what you have.
All signs point to this
Getting older doesn’t mean what most women think it means – that your body will simply fall apart, and you’ll lose your marbles and be old and sick, well before your time.
Digestive distress is a sure sign of inflammation, & something going on further “upstream” in your body - regardless of your symptoms or complaints.
Using fresh, wholesome ingredients & my personal formula for success, those symptoms, can be managed. And regardless of your limitations - dietary or otherwise - there are many creative ways to get around them!
And I happen to have creativity in spades!
